St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal School has an innovative new Spanish language program!
Students in kindergarten through 5th grade will be attending daily Spanish classes as a core component of their curriculum (preschoolers also attend on a varied schedule). The goal of this program is to push students to proficiency, emphasizing the ability to navigate conversations, instructions, and common daily interactions in Spanish. In addition to interactive classroom instruction, students also use the online language platform DuoLingo to reinforce skills at the students’ own pace.
“Multilingualism is a key element of high-quality 21st-century education; exposing kids to global culture helps cultivate positive attitudes towards diversity, and increases their ability to collaborate with others.
Think about the level of cooperation needed on the International Space Station for example; we need to prepare our students now for these types of environments of the future” says Head of School Colin O’Neal. Research has indeed demonstrated that early learning of a second language has many cognitive advantages because it supports the development of the brain’s prefrontal cortex, that region responsible for outcomes in subjects like math, science, and reading, as well as emotional regulation. St. Thomas also expects its students will have an easier time transitioning into language programs in middle and high school because of this early foundation.
If you are interested in having your child become bilingual, or learning more about the many other excellent educational programs at St. Thomas has, the school will host an Open House scheduled February 18 through 22 from 8:00 am until 3:00 pm, with an evening session on Thursday, February 21 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm.
