As a part of the cultural aspect and global awareness of the language, St. Thomas students had the opportunity to learn about Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, during Spanish class. They discussed the history and purpose of the holiday and the many ways it is celebrated in different Latin American countries.
To collaborate with Spanish class lessons on Dia de los Muertos, students in art class created papel picado (paper flags) and flowers for the ofrenda. Students were comforted with an experience from one culture’s way of honoring and remembering loved ones who have passed away. Students collaborated with their class to create an Otomi art piece that celebrated the lives of pets who have passed away.
